Marburg in Germany (Central Hesse)

Marburg is a beautiful and historical city located in the state of Hesse (Mittelhessen), Germany. Marburg lies on the Lahn River and it the main town for the Marburg-Biedenkopf district. Marburg is also the seat of the world’s oldest Protestant University. The University of Marburg was founded in 1527 by Hesse native Landgrave Philipp I. In 1609, the University of Marburg established the first professorship for chemistry in the world. Today the university is home to approximately 20,000 students. Several houses of fraternity and sorority organizations can be found at the university.
Marburg is famous today for its many medieval churches such as the Elisabethkirche, which is noted as being one of the first truly Gothic churches north of the Alps. The architecture in Marburg alone is credited with many tourists who visit the region annually. The city is in essence a University town and offers visitors glimpses into a castle crowned Renaissance period that has, for centuries, gone unspoiled.
Marburg is also home to many beautiful hotels and bed and breakfast institutions. Finding guest rooms (Pensionen) is an easy task in this beautiful city. The city offers one of Germany’s finest nightclubs, FunPark. This world famed club offers special themed evenings such as Black Beat Ladies’ Night and RockPark, as well as a fun filled disco evening for those who are looking to dance the night away. Youth clubs can also be found in the Marburg area for those who have teenagers and young adults.
